Shop Stockroom and Sorting Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers to help behind the scenes sorting stock and pricing it ready for sale. Our retail department raises vital funds for St Leonard’s through the sale of pre-loved goods and is also a valuable face of the Hospice across our local communities.

When am I needed?

Our shops and Donation Centre are open Monday – Saturday 9am – 4pm.

Morning shifts tend to run 9am – 1pm, Afternoon shifts tend to run 12:30pm – 4:30pm although other shifts can be accommodated as long as they are at least 2 hours in length.  Weekly or fortnightly shifts are preferred.

We have 9 shops and a Donation Centre across York at the following locations:

  • Acomb, Clothes
  • Acomb, Donation Centre
  • Acomb, Furniture
  • Broadway (Fulford)
  • Colliergate (town centre)
  • Fossgate (town centre)
  • Haxby
  • Layerthorpe
  • Scarcroft Road
  • Tang Hall

We also have shops in:

  • Easingwold
  • Malton
  • Pocklington
  • Selby, Gowthorpe
  • Selby, Ousegate

What will I be doing?

  • Working alongside staff and other volunteers in the back of the shop
  • Moving bags and boxes of donations, this may involve some lifting
  • Identifying items suitable for sale
  • Hanging and ticketing clothing
  • Labelling Gift Aid items
  • Checking items are complete and in working order
  • Ensuring unsalable goods are suitably recycled
  • Preparing top-up stock for the shop floor
  • Identifying high value items for further research or sale online

What skills and qualities will I need?

  • Positive attitude
  • Ability to work under the instruction of the manager and work as part of a team of volunteers
  • Demonstrate good attention to detail
  • An interest in, or knowledge of, clothing brands and trends is useful but not essential
  • A willingness to learn new skills, no experience necessary
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality

Support and Supervision

The St Leonard’s Hospice Retail Team (Head Office) will provide you with full training and liaise closely with you over all aspects of your role.

Volunteers will be supervised by the Shop Manager and Staff, supported by the Retail Team. The Volunteer Services Team will help guide you through the application and induction process and be your point of contact for general enquiries about volunteering.

Training

Volunteers are required to complete mandatory training modules which are usually delivered via our online platform. Additional, booster and refresher training may be delivered as needed via e-learning, video links or face to face. You may also be invited to attend role specific in person meetings where appropriate.
