Donation Centre Greeter Volunteer

We are looking for friendly volunteers to welcome those who come to donate items in our Donation Centre which accept donations from members of the public 6 days a week. From here they are sorted, priced and shipped out for sale in our 14 shops.

When am I needed?

The Donation Centre is open Monday to Saturday, 9am-4pm.

Morning or afternoon shifts can be arranged to suit your availability and are usually for 3 hours, preferably on a weekly or fortnightly basis.

What will I be doing?

  • Greeting and thanking donors, making them feel valued
  • Accepting donations from the public, advising on what can be donated, and promoting the Gift Aid scheme
  • Moving donations to the holding point in the shop
  • Working alongside staff and other volunteers in the warehouse in Acomb, York
  • Assisting with sorting donations if the door is quiet

What skills and qualities will I need?

  • Be friendly and confident and enjoy engaging with people
  • Be able to work under the instruction of the managers and work as part of a team of volunteers
  • Be able to deal with enquiries from the general public
  • Have a positive attitude
  • Demonstrate good attention to detail  
  • Have a willingness to learn new skills – no experience necessary
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality

Support and Supervision

Volunteers will be supervised by the Donation Centre managers, supported by the St Leonard’s Hospice Retail Team, based in the Support Office, who together will provide you with general training  and liaise closely with you over all aspects of your role.

The Volunteer Services Team will help guide you through the application and induction process and be your point of contact for general enquiries about volunteering.

Training

Volunteers are required to complete mandatory training modules which are usually delivered via our online platform. Additional, booster and refresher training may be delivered as needed via e-learning, video links or face to face. You may also be invited to attend role specific in person meetings where appropriate.
